I often say that when couples divorce, everyone loses, especially the children. I also like to tell couples that children are, without a doubt, the ultimate “trump card” in a marriage. In other words, out of all the reasons for couples to work hard at having a healthy, vibrant, and God-filled marriage, the negative effects that divorce and / or a dismal marriage has upon children should, just about, top the list.

I have five children. When these little ones first started to come along, I realized that it would be extremely selfish for me to accept negative character traits in my life, especially if those negative behaviors would be imitated by my children. This is what has inspired a great amount of self improvement in my life and marriage. That is, more is caught than taught, and children are more likely to go in the direction that you lead rather than the direction you point.

Michael Pearl once said, “The number one rule of child training is you must first become what you want your children to be.”. That being the case, if you want your children to develop an appetite for a functional home and relationship with their future spouse, then you may want to start spoon-feeding them with the love, adoration, and the respect that you and your spouse should have for one another.
