How to Choose a Family Activity – The Negative Effects of Tv, Video Games
As Christians, we tend to ask the wrong question when we consider an activity for the family. That is, rather than asking, “What’s good about this activity?”, we tend to ask questions like “What’s wrong with this activity?”. While speaking at a Family Conference in Alabama, I once shared with the congregation five questions that every family should ask themselves before participating in any activity:
1. Will this activity cause our children to use their imaginations?
Our modern day forms of entertainment have greatly suppressed our children’s opportunities to use their imaginations. The word amuse literally means “not to think”, and our homes are absolutely overrun with what I call “mindless entertainment”. The sin of it all is that instead of spending our leisure time doing things that build relationships, strengthen character, instruct our minds, and help others, we participate in activities that tend to oversatiate our hearts, numb our minds, and, at times, quench the Holy Spirit.
Instead of buying that toy that takes six “D” size batteries, try just giving your children six giant cardboard boxes. You’ll be amazed at the fun children can have with such simple items as this.
Our Christmas and birthday presents sometimes include high tech stuff, however, we try to buy items like zip-lines, bicycles, material for homemade swing sets, sewing machines, craft items, and musical instruments.
2. Will this activity help to build relationships in our home?
3. Will this activity leave our children tired, happy, and thankful at the end of the day?
At the end of the day, I like to see my children in good spirits and with big blue bags underneath their eyes!
4. While participating in this activity, will we be able to whole-heartedly quote the verse which says, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes:” (Psalm 101:3).
5. Would we do this activity if Christ were sitting next to us?
Actually, if you are saved, Christ is with you in whatever you do.
